Falls off of roofs remain the number one cause of death among construction workers. Even if a fall isn’t fatal, it’s often personally devastating, resulting in injuries that wreck an individual’s ability to earn income and permanently alter their quality of life.
About two years ago, OSHA launched a fall campaign specifically designed to raise awareness about the dangers falls––and how they can be prevented. Organizers published three key steps to minimizing risk:
1) Plan ahead to get the job done safely.
2) Provide the right equipment.
3) Train everyone to use the equipment safely.
We encourage employers and workers alike to review the materials still available on OSHA’s site.
Roofers, our industry is the riskiest of all. According to a study funded by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, “the odds of fatal falls from roofs were higher for roofing and residential construction than any other construction sector.”
Edge Defense™ is redefining the way we keep rooftop workers safe. Installed around the roof’s perimeter, the bright yellow safety mats contain sensitive electrodes that sound the alarm whenever the designated weight limit is detected on the mat, helping to ensure better awareness of the roof’s edge.
Summer is the best time of year to install the entire Roof Monitor™ system. Let’s talk today about how we can turn your roof into a smart roof.
